How to Build Resilience Through Positivity

AcademicAlly, LLC: November 21, 2024

November is devoted to the theme of reliance. At this point in the year, we are deep into the fall. The daylight is shorter, and the weather is shifting into colder temperatures. For many people, this time of year becomes challenging due to changes in mood. We thought we would give you a boost with some ideas to boost your resilience.

In the rollercoaster ride of life, there’s one ticket that guarantees a smoother journey: the power of positivity. Imagine looking at the world from the peak point of that rollercoaster with a mindset so resilient, you feel empowered to face whatever challenges you will encounter when your cart angles down the other side of the tracks. Maintaining a positive outlook is a powerful strategy for navigating challenges. It’s important to be aware of the difficulties and “what-ifs” we may encounter. But part of what enables us to successfully address these challenges is focusing on the positives and finding opportunities within that adversity. By choosing to nurture hope and highlight the constructive aspects of every situation, we equip ourselves to tackle problems with renewed energy and creativity.

Action: Focus on the Positives and Maintain a Hopeful Outlook

Focusing on the positives doesn’t mean ignoring reality or downplaying difficulties. Instead, it’s about acknowledging challenges while choosing to highlight the opportunities and lessons they present. Here’s how you can cultivate a hopeful outlook:

  1. Reframe Challenges: Imagine a glass not just half full or half empty, but ready for a refreshing refill. Reframing challenges allows you to see them as opportunities to learn and grow. Consider Thomas Edison, whose thousands of failed experiments didn’t deter him from eventually inventing the lightbulb. Instead of viewing each failure negatively, he famously stated, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Just because things aren’t going according to plan doesn’t mean you can’t take the lessons from that outcome and empower yourself with a better plan of action for your next go around.
  2. Gratitude Practices: Focusing on what we’re thankful for can shift our mindset. Take the story of Oprah Winfrey, who overcame a turbulent childhood to become one of the most influential media figures. Despite her past adversities, Oprah emphasizes gratitude and focuses on present blessings as key tools in her journey. This positivity has propelled her forward, enabling her to reach her goals and assist others in the process.
  3. Surround Yourself with Positivity: The people around us influence our outlook. Aligning with supportive and positive individuals can serve as a buoy to keep our spirits afloat. I had the privilege of traveling to South Africa. While I was there, I visited Nelson Mandela’s prison cell on Robben Island. As I learned more about this inspirational figure, what became clear was the fact that during his years of imprisonment, he found solace and hope through letters and visits from loved ones who uplifted him and reinforced his positive outlook. His circumstances were untenable and yet, he was able to find hope and strength in the power of positivity.

Benefit: Encourages a Proactive and Constructive Approach to Dealing with Difficulties

Maintaining a hopeful outlook does more than just improve mood; it actively enhances our ability to address challenges head-on.

  1. Proactivity Over Passivity: A positive mindset propels action. Despite the horror that many Holocaust survivors endured in the concentration camps, many made it their mission to take their experience and educate the world about the dangers of hatred. They could have surrendered to their trauma, but many authors, artists, playwrights, and musicians rose from the ashes of that dark time.
  2. Constructive Problem Solving: Positivity allows for better problem-solving by clearing mental clutter and fostering creativity. J.K. Rowling’s ideas for a book about a boy wizard were not initially well received. She faced numerous  rejections before finally publishing Harry Potter. In many interviews, she was asked what contributed most to her success. She attributes part of her success to maintaining a hopeful attitude, enabling her to stay innovative and persistent. Even though she was turned away multiple times, she stayed optimistic, and forged ahead until she found a publisher who was willing to take a chance on her dream.
  3. Emotional Resilience: A positive outlook strengthens emotional resilience, helping individuals bounce back quickly from setbacks. Here’s a little known fact: Michael Jordan was rejected from his high school’s varsity basketball team, long before he became an NBA phenom. Despite this disappointment, he maintained a positive perspective and pursued his dream of playing basketball. He considered this failure a mere steppingstone and used this experience to fuel his motivation to succeed.
  4. Inspiration to Others: Embracing positivity not only transforms your life but can inspire those around you. Consider Malala Yousafzai, who continues to advocate for education despite the threats she received from the Taliban. Her positivity and courage have motivated millions globally to believe in change and pursue their goals.

Here’s the Thing: maintaining a positive outlook is a powerful approach to addressing adversity. It fosters a mindset that is open to learning and adapts to changing circumstances, leading to proactive and constructive solutions. By focusing on the positives and nourishing a hopeful perspective, we transform challenges into pathways for growth, effectively encouraging resilience and inspiration in both ourselves and those around us. So, when life hands you lemons, embrace a positive outlook, and the world just might join you in making lemonade.
